Punters swing towards Europe
The Ryder Cup gets under way early on Friday with the bookmakers predicting that £25 million will be gambled on it. There are certainly no shortage of markets for punters to get their teeth into, although one William Hill customer has clearly not been distracted - staking a record £247,000 on America to win at 6-5. Europe remain 5-6 favourites, though, with the tie a best-priced 10-1.
Paddy Power, head of communications for Paddy Power, says his firm have seen plenty of money for Europe. “In the last 24 hours, the punters are coming for Europe with several bets approaching £10,000 backing Woosie’s men. A combination of the weather conditions, Tiger’s early exit at Wentworth and a feeling there may be a few too many rookies in the American team has swung punters’ support back in the favour of the European team.”
Darren Clarke is 14-1 with Paddy Power to sink the winning putt, while Tiger Woods is 9-2 to be top overall points scorer. Sergio Garcia is 5-1 to be top European scorer, while those who anticipate Europe gaining a crushing success can get 1,000-1 on them doing so by a 23-5 margin.
